1. Shamsul Haq

(1 March 1927 – 16 June 1998) was a Bangladeshi politician. He was the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's second cabinet from April 1972 to March 1973.


Early life

Shamsul Haque was born on March 1, 1927 in Thanadhin Thengarbandh village of Kaliakair in present day Gazipur district. His father's name is Osman Gani, mother's name is Haytan Necha. He was elected as the VP of Dhaka University Salimullah Muslim Hall Student Council in 1952-53 academic year at Dhaka University. He received the Wood Batch Medal, the highest title of scouts, as the team leader of the Dhaka University Scout Team. Arrested and imprisoned for his involvement in the national language movement. He served as the Vice President of East Pakistan Chhatra League till 1953. He joined the Awami League in the same year when his student life ended.

Political life

He served as the President of Dhaka Sadar North Division Awami League in 1956 and the President of Dhaka District Awami League from 1958 to 1972. At the same time he served as joint secretary of Nikhil Pakistan Awami Muslim League, leading the movement against the infamous Hamidur Rahman Commission in 1962.


In 1954, he was elected as a member of the Provincial Council as a candidate of the United Front from Kaliakor Joydevpur. He was arrested in 1966 for playing an important role in Bangabandhu's six-point movement and was imprisoned until 1967. Agartala arranged for legal action against the conspiracy case. Actively participated in the mass movement of 1969.

He was elected as a member of the National Assembly in the historic election of 1970 from Sreepur, Joydevpur, Kaliakoi constituencies. He served as an advisor to the Joydevpur Sangram Parishad on March 19, 1971. On March 27, 1971, he went to Piruzali from Dhaka and held a public meeting with Shafir Uddin Ahmed at Sreepur on March 30. On 1st April he left for India along with Shafiuddin Ahmed and Abdul Hakeem Master. It is said that he had a meeting with former army chief Major General KM Safiullah before leaving. Later they entered Dhallu police station in India on April 11 through Haluaghat. On April 17th they reached Shillong with the help of Assam Agriculture Minister Mainul Hossain. From there they left for Calcutta on 3rd May. Met the Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi as Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of the Provisional Government.

After independence in 1972, he joined the cabinet of Bangabandhu government. He was re-elected to the National Assembly in 1973 and served as Minister of Jute and Local Government in Bangabandhu's successful cabinet. He served as Ambassador of Bangladesh to Soviet Russia. He was the founding president of the Independence Football Team in 1971. He is one of the oldest cooperatives in this country. He was the former Chairman of Dhaka Central Cooperative Bank and served as the Executive Committee President of Bhawal Mirzapur Haji Zamir Uddin High School till his death.

Death

He died on June 16, 1998 while undergoing treatment at Dhaka PG Hospital.
